My Top Twelve Images of 2022

2022 is slowly coming to its end and what a year it has been! I have shot more images and concepts this year than ever before, finished a complex project for University and started taking on my first paid clients. With just a few weeks left of this year, I thought this week I would share my top 12 images of 2022, a favourite image for each month and explain just why I love them so much. This was extremely hard to choose, so you can see pretty much everything I shot or worked on this year over on my Instagram!

No. 1: January

Starting off strong with this portrait of my lovely friend, shot in the studio using a ‘hero’ lighting technique. For experimentation, I used a quality street wrapper over the lens to create a soft-focused, hazy effect and I really love the outcome. Sometimes the best inspiration comes from household items, or leftover Christmas chocolate!

No. 2: February

I couldn’t pick just one for February, so here is my favourite shoot from this month (and arguably of the year). I had the privilege of bringing Blood Stained Reputation, a local Doncaster band, into the studio at University for their first professional photoshoot. We experimented with green and purple gels, as well as capturing the standard group and individual shots. These are some of my favourite images from the entire year, and I got to have this experience with a dear University friend assisting me. Check out Blood Stained Reputation on Instagram!

No. 3: March

My favourite image for the month of March brings focus to my final major project. During this month, I was working hard on creating work for ‘visibilis’, which you can read more about here! This image came from studying the eye as a mechanism which shares similarities with a camera lens and believe it or not, I shot this image on my own; a self portrait of my eye if you will. After having time to reflect on this project, I have come to love it almost as equally as I do ‘Souviens-toi de Moi’.

No. 4: April

I spent April building my portfolio, and this shoot is another of my favourites from this year. I shot in a new location with a dear friend, coming across this lake, which made the perfect atmosphere for some Taylor Swift inspired images. Looking back on this shoot now, it feels so special, as we now know my friend was unknowingly pregnant at the time!

No. 5: May

Despite being in the midst of final exhibition preparations, I managed to squeeze in a creative portrait shoot with a fellow University student for their MUA degree. The concept was ‘Earth’, so there was a focus on bringing the landscape into the portraits. The wardrobe, prosthetics and makeup came together so well and this is my favourite image from that shoot.

MUA: Jasmine Doherty

No. 6: June

June provides something a little different from the year so far. I photographed my University Dance Society’s summer show! The society always concludes with a show at the end of each semester and this was my first experience of photographing in a theatre. I was absolutely gutted to have been double-booked for their winter show this year, but I hope I can come back again for their 2023 summer show instead.

No. 7: July

July is where the year begins to get sticky. Half of my family unexpectedly tested positive for COVID, so I didn’t actually get the chance to shoot anything new that month. Perhaps this was the universe forcing me to take a break from creating, which was well-needed after a very intense, final six months of University. While I have no favourite photo from this month, enjoy another of my favourites from the dance society summer show instead!

No. 8: August

The summer months are my opportunity to practise my landscape photography skills, as I spend a majority of the month travelling the Cornish coastline. This image happened purely by chance, as we had some stormy weather due. The sun just managed to break through the dense cloud cover, casting light onto the edge of the harbour. It was such a fleeting moment in time, and I’m glad I could capture that moment with my camera.

No. 9: September

When September comes around, so does the start of Spooktober! I shoot a lot of my Halloween concepts this month so I can share them throughout October to allow other photographers and creatives to be inspired. You can read more about my Spooktober process here. It was tough choosing a favourite image for September, but this adorable couple's pumpkin-head photoshoot has to make my top 12!

No. 10: October

This may come across a little self-absorbed, but my favourite image for October is this self portrait shot for Spooktober. I wanted to capture an ‘engagement gone wrong’ murder-mystery concept, taking inspiration from the old-Hollywood era and the love of a good Hollywood scandal! This was my first time creating a self-portrait that experimented with a narrative, apart from ‘No Body, No Crime’ of course, and I hope to create more concepts like this in the future.

No. 11: November

Cheating slightly with November’s image, as it was actually shot at the very end of October. It still counts right! This image is from a lovely couple’s shoot at a local pumpkin patch, as part of my autumn mini photoshoot offer. It was great to meet them, and their lovely dog. Well behaved pets are always welcome at my photoshoots, they are part of the family too!

No. 12: December

Last but most certainly not least is another self portrait. While this series was shot in October, I have saved some of the images for this month as I used Quality Streets, a favourite Christmas chocolate for some. I have a few Christmas mini sessions coming up this month, so just imagine in your head that those images are my favourites this month too! That being said, if anyone has any Christmas concepts they would like me to shoot, I would love to hear them.

That brings my top 12 images of 2022 to an end. Congratulations if you made it this far! It has been so rewarding to work solely on my practice this year, and create work I’m truly proud of. I hope next year is full of more opportunities for creativity, and I hope I get to meet some lovely new clients. Next week is my final blog for this year, where I will be reflecting on 2022 in more depth, it’s set to be a good one! Keep an eye out on my Instagram for my top nine social media posts of this year.
