Four Posing Prompts for Couples

February is the month of love and with Valentine’s day soon approaching, I thought I would share with you four posing prompts for couples! Of course, these aren’t just limited to Valentine’s day, you can use these prompts during any time of the year as they are extremely versatile. I would recommend some of these prompts for location shoots over studio shoots, as they allow you to capture some great natural and authentic images. These four posing prompts are really simple to direct as a photographer and you can easily add your own twist to suit your photographic style. Additionally, they are great poses to create as a couple on your own!

If you like the look of the poses below, you can book your own photoshoot with me with 10% off for ANY photoshoot bookings made in February. This offer is not exclusive to couples, it runs across all of my services because everyone deserves to treat themselves during Valentine’s.

My biggest tip for using any of these prompts, is to not put your camera down right after you give them. Continue to shoot the couple’s interaction afterwards or you might miss out on some lovely moments between them.

1. The ‘Drunk’ Walk

Ask your couple to hold hands and walk towards you (or away from you) like they are a little tipsy or giddy after a night out. I find it best to also demonstrate this walk and explain to them that while it feels silly, it looks great on camera. Make sure to encourage your couple and laugh with them so they feel less awkward, they will soon start laughing along and do their own thing which looks really natural on camera.

2. The Eskimo Kiss

This is another pose which can bring out the natural connection between your couple. Ask them to rub their noses together in an ‘Eskimo’ style kiss. Sometimes couples may feel awkward sharing a kiss for the camera, so this prompt can be a great way to encourage affection between them that they are comfortable with. You can also capture some great faces and giggles too! So don’t stop shooting right after the ‘Eskimo’ prompt or you might miss out on a quick kiss.

3. Walk Away

I like to do this at the beginning or end of a shoot as it gives your couple the opportunity to talk to each other without worrying about how they look on camera. Similarly to the ‘drunk’ walk, I’ll ask the couple to hold hands while they walk and make eye contact with each other, occasionally asking them to stop or look back towards the camera. Once they have walked far enough, ask them to walk back towards you.

4. Have fun with props

Using props is a great way to get your couples to have some fun. This can also allow you to create a variety of seasonal packages amongst your services, as you can use different props for holidays such as Valentine’s or Christmas. Below are two examples of two different couples using pumpkins in their shoots. One couple opted for an autumnal mini, so we headed to the pumpkin patch and I had them hold some pumpkins in front of their faces and play around. The other couple opted for a more Halloween-themed shoot, so we used carved pumpkins which created an incredibly unique couple’s shoot which suited them as a couple. As you can see, each couple interacted with the prop differently, so using props can help ensure no two photoshoots look the same!

Be sure to give these prompts a try on your next photoshoot, or if you are a couple, give them a try or suggest them to your photographer! I love when clients get involved in their shoot and suggest their own prompts to try. Remember, these prompts can be utilised during any time of the year and some of them, such as the ‘drunk’ walking doesn’t have to be limited to couples! Enjoy your Valentine’s if you can, and I’m sending love to those who find this holiday difficult. Let me know if you would like to see more posing prompts like these in the future, and a huge thank you to Connor and Becky for booking your couple’s shoot with me.
