Quite a few of you have been interested in the work that goes on behind the scenes of the images you see over on Instagram, so, this week marks the start of a new series on the blog! Welcome to the ‘Behind the Lens’ series, where I will break down the process of the photoshoot from the planning, the shoot, and the finished product. Hopefully, this will give you more of an insight into how my photoshoots often work, and perhaps even consider booking! This week, since it is October, we’re going to delve into an autumnal, styled lifestyle photoshoot from last year.

Before we begin, I am still taking bookings for autumnal minis right through until mid November. These are perfect for families and couples, mini branding sessions or location headshots, and those content creators who are looking for some autumn vibes on your feed. If you’re a model wanting to add some seasonal images to your portfolio, this is perfect for you too! Head over to my contact page to enquire and I will get back to you with all the information. Even if you don’t think these shoots are for you, they are adaptable, so don’t hesitate to get in touch!

Onto the photoshoot!

Planning

The theme for this shoot was of course, all things autumnal, which meant colour palette was extremely important. When I think of autumn, I think of warm tones such as mustards and browns. I also think of the classic autumnal clothing trends, specifically a long coat. In terms of the overall feeling for the shoot, I wanted to keep it really classic and focus very much on that stereotypical autumnal image. There’s a lot of controversy in photography over whether you should stick to stereotypes and clichés. Personally, I don’t think it’s a bad thing to be a little cliché from time to time, but only if the work suits it.

For posing inspiration, I created this moodboard below. These days, my moodboards are very different! You can read that blog here.

Shooting

I chose my location based on the colour palette I desired for the shoot, and used a Grade I listed country house local to me. My model chose her outfit based on the colour palette and trending autumnal clothing and when combined with the location, it worked really well. The model even brought along a scarf which was really fun to experiment with, and was wearing some lovely jewellery, so I took some time to focus on those pieces. At the time, I didn’t capture any behind the scenes, but we shot for around an hour and utilised the staircases at the front and back of the house, taking the opportunity to capture a bit of movement. We also got some images by a brick wall which added some lovely red colour and texture.

Post-Production

After the planning and photoshoot process, comes the post-production or editing process. Here, I go through all the RAW files and do what’s called a ‘cull’. This is where I delete any images that are blurry, unsalvageable in terms of exposure, repeats or any images deemed unflattering. Then, I edited according to my chosen colour palette, keeping the images really warm-toned. When it comes to retouching, I tend to do very little. I simply remove any blemishes or flecks of makeup because I personally believe it’s important for the image to be as natural as possible, so I won’t remove any permanent marks on your face or body. There are enough unrealistic beauty standards out there without photographers warping your perception of your appearance through over the top retouching.

Here are some of the final images from the shoot! A year on and I still love how this shoot turned out. Thank you to my lovely model for stepping in front of the camera! Let me know what photoshoot you’d like to see next on the ‘Behind the Lens’ (you can find pretty much everything I have created so far over on my Instagram). Finally, remember to get in touch if you would like to book an autumnal mini session!
